The Nation Builders Initiative (TNBI): Core identity documents

Our Origin

The Nation Builders Initiative was born from the embers of the #FixNaijaTop3 Movement—a citizen-led outcry for accountability in Nigeria's most critical sectors. We evolved because we realised that pointing out what is broken is only the first step. The essential work is in building the builders: equipping citizens, especially the youth, with the civic consciousness, practical skills, and moral clarity to reconstruct their nation from the ground up.

Our Vision

A Nigeria where every citizen is an empowered nation builder—conscious of their rights, equipped with practical skills, and committed to the common good; a nation that can feed itself, secure itself, and offer every child a future of dignity and potential.

Our Mission

To cultivate a generation of informed, skilled, and responsible citizens through grassroots civic education, community empowerment programs, and the promotion of accountable leadership, thereby transforming passive observers into active architects of national development.

Who We Are

The Nation Builders Initiative (TNBI) is a non-profit, non-partisan community of Nigerians united by a single conviction: that lasting change is built by citizens, not waited for from leaders. We are a network of professionals, students, educators, and concerned citizens spread across Kano, Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Bauchi, and beyond—united by our WhatsApp groups and our shared purpose.

We do not merely critique; we construct. We do not just advocate; we act. Our work is currently focused on two parallel tracks:

  1. Civic Empowerment & Accountability: Through public enlightenment, investigative journalism, and advocacy for systemic reform (housed in our independent media platform, Nation Builders Magazine).
  2. Grassroots Community Development: Through flagship projects like the Almajiri Restoration Pilot, which seeks to integrate modern literacy, numeracy, and identity education into traditional Quranic schools, proving that every child, no matter how neglected, has the potential to become a builder.

Our Approach

  • We build, don't just complain: Our response to the failures of institutions like the CAC and NERDC is to create functional alternatives and models of what works.
  • We start small, then scale: We believe in the power of the pilot—proving a concept in one community, with one Malam, for one term—before seeking to replicate it.
  • We respect, we don't replace: Whether engaging with Malams in the Almajiri system or community leaders, our role is to support and enhance existing structures, not to dismantle them.
  • We are patient & persistent: We have learned from our six-month battle with bureaucratic red tape that nation-building is a marathon, not a sprint.

A Note on Nation Builders Magazine

Nation Builders Magazine is an independent media platform, distinct from The Nation Builders Initiative.

Founded by Faruk Ahmed Umar and Adamu Muhammad Nababa, the magazine serves as the independent, uncompromising voice for the values we hold dear. Its mission is to:

  • Publish in-depth investigative reports and political commentary.
  • Hold power to account through fearless, evidence-based journalism.
  • Provide a platform for the ideas, critiques, and stories that shape the national consciousness.

While TNBI focuses on grassroots action and community programs, Nation Builders Magazine focuses on public enlightenment and systemic critique. They are sibling organisations—sharing a common vision for Nigeria but operating with distinct mandates. TNBI builds from the ground up; the magazine speaks truth to power. Together, they form a comprehensive force for national renewal.
